阅读下面短文,按照句子结构的语法和上下文连贯的要求,在空格处填入一个适当的词或使用括号中词语的正确形式填空,并将答案填写在答题卡标号为16~25的相应位置上。
When you read a story in English, do you read it for the story 16       for the English? This is a question 17      is not so foolish as it may seem, for I find that many students of English pay far more attention to the story18         to the English. For instance, they care for how the mystery in the story 19        (solve), but do not remember a single sentence in the story and cannot tell what preposition(介词) is used before a certain word in the speech of a certain character.
Of course, 20       you want to know the story only, you need not bother about the language. But a student of English is 21      (differ) from a student of stories or 22       is called the general reader. As you may also have learned from the above, you ought to read not only very 23      (careful) but also aloud till you learn the passage by heart and can recite it as if it were your own. On 24       hand, this will teach you many useful words and phrases; on the other hand, it 25    (help) you to avoid many errors and faults in expression.

II. 阅读(共两节,满分50分)
第一节  阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)
A
Philip was a nine-year-old boy in a Sunday school class of 8-year-old girls and boys. Sometimes the third graders didn’t welcome Philip into their group and usually tricked him. This was not because he was older, but because he was “different”. You see, Philip suffered from a condition called Downs’s Syndrome. This made him “different”, with his facial characteristics, slow responses and mental problems.
One Sunday after Easter, the Sunday school teacher gathered some plastic eggs that pulled apart in the middle. The teacher gave one to each child. On that beautiful spring day, the children were to go out and discover for themselves some symbol of “new life” and place it inside the plastic eggs.
After the children returned to the classroom, the teacher opened their eggs one by one, asking each child to explain that symbol of “new life”. The first opened egg contained a flower. Everyone cheered. In another was a butterfly…. When the teacher opened the last egg, it was empty. “That’s stupid,” said someone. The teacher felt a pull at his shirt. It was Philip. Looking up, Philip said, “It’s mine. I did it. It’s empty. I have new life, because the tomb is empty.” Not a sound was heard in class at all. From that day on, Philip became a real part of the group. They welcomed him, and whatever made him different was never mentioned again.
Philip’s family knew he wouldn’t live a long life, for there were too many things wrong with him.

I remember my mother as a strong woman. She came to America when she was 12—old enough to remember her language, she achieved scores and grades high enough to be admitted to Duke University. With a degree in computer science, she finally became the manager of a company in New York. My mother could give fluent speeches, say “wolves” correctly.
It was my mother who always stressed the importance of language. From the time I was born, I was read to. I would fall asleep to the sounds of my parents’ voices, whether it was my dad’s softly accented, or my mother’s clear English. The flow of language was unbroken, and whether in Chinese or English, the stream of communication flowed through our house.
One October morning in sixth grade, after my mother had left to catch the train to the city, I left the house for the bus stop. I was surprised when I saw our car, the door hanging open. As I drew closer, I saw my mother lying on the ground.
In the hospital, it was hard to believe that the lady who lay before me was my mom. My mother could not remember my name. As the leaves changed colors, it became clear that the stroke had created a wall between my mother’s mind and mouth: her mind was not any less clear, but the words she spoke were not what she meant.
The battle my mother faced taught me the importance of language. Without it, identity does not exist; relationships cannot be formed; stories cannot be told; directions cannot be given, and knowing anything about anyone is impossible. Without language, communication cannot take place. Without language, one cannot express the beauty of a sunset or the kindness of a stranger. The world would pass us by in silence.
31. From where might the author’s mom come to America?
A. China        B. England        C. Russia        D. Canada
32. From the second paragraph, we can know ________.

33. According to the last two paragraphs, the author’s mom was unable to _______.

C. speak                D. open her mouth
34. The underlined word “stroke” in the 4th paragraph most probably refers to
    ______.
A. an accident        B. a hit        C. an illness        D. a robbery
35. This passage is mainly about _________.
A. a strong mother                B. the importance of language
C. a family disaster                D. the significance of teaching language

C
Is traveling by plane still the best way to travel? This is a question that a lot of people are probably now asking themselves, especially since they currently have a longer list of items that are not allowed on airplanes because of the recent threats that have come to light. But does this mean that traveling by plane is now the worst way to travel? Well, it really depends on how you look at it.
Let‘s take into consideration some of the other ways to travel. If you choose to travel by train, then it will probably take you a longer time to get to your destination. But a train ride is not that uncomfortable; it is a good way to travel. Another option(选项) that you have is to travel by car. Not too many people really like to take long trips in a car with their family. You will have to make a lot rnore stops, and you may end up more exhausted(筋疲力尽).
The most uncomfortable option for long trips is the bus. You may not realize it but riding on a bus can be very exhausting. Some feel that the price of a bus trip is so much cheaper than a plane ride. While this may be true in most cases, for you to actually be able to enjoy your vacation, it may be better to take a plane.
If you choose to travel by plane it will mean spending extra time in the airport, and there is always the possibility of a delay. But the extra security measures are there for your safety. Even if you have to wait in line for a long period of time, at least you know that it is the only way to be fully protected. It is also a lot easier to travel by plane when you have young children. You still end up getting to your destination a lot quicker than using other means of transportation.
36. People begin to doubt the benefits of plane travel because __________.
A. there are likely to be more plane crashes
B. it has become more expensive
C. planes travel more slowly than before
D. there are more limits on things passengers can take
37. What does the writer think of train travel?
A. It is the best way to travel now.
B. It is quite great on the whole.
C. It is very uncomfortable.
D. It is safer than car travel.
38. According to the third paragraph, bus travel __________.
A. should be promoted
B. has no advantages
C. allows you to enjoy your vacation
D. is not a good choice for long trips
39. Which of the following statements about the security measures in the airport is NOT true?
A. They usually take a long period of time.
B. They make plane travel slower than some other ways of traveling.
C. They have their advantages and disadvantages.
D. They aim to protect the passengers.
40. The main purpose of the passage is to __________.
A. find out the worst way to travel
B. explain why there are security checks
C. advise people to travel by plane
D. educate people on safe traveling

My son Advait taught me a beautiful lesson today. He called out to me saying. “Papa, sit”. That usually means leaving everything and sitting down to play with him. As he will not stop calling out till I give in. He was playing with beads (珠子), an exercise to help build the motor skills.
Anyway, so after he finished playing with the beads he began to put them in their box. He did that very slowly and carefully as if they were made of chocolate. And with over a hundred beads to go, I was getting tired “Why could he not pick up 10 in one go and put them in?” said my anxious mind. Damn! My morning was going to go for a toss today.
And then it hit me like a brick. This boy was enjoying the whole process. For him the fun was in the game, in the preparation for the game and in the process of properly collecting and picking up. It was not just about his turn or the fun part. Every bit was as fun as the other. “What a great view to have.” I thought to myself. To live each moment as it is the perfect moment. To do each task as if it were the most awesome task to do. Nothing else matters.
I thought of myself as a kid when we would go out to play cricket(扳球). If I was not playing, I was unhappy as I desperately waited for my toss to do so. Only the process of doing something I associated with happiness made me cheerful. The rest of the time I was waiting for my turn in the future or thinking of a great hit from the past. This is also how I have so often lived my life, waiting for something in the future or looking back on what it was like in the past.
Now, Advait was showing me that life was about thoroughly living every moment with complete love and peace. I realized that the truest and happiest moments of my life have been the ones where I fully participated without thoughts of the past or the future.

第二节 读写任务(共1小题,满分25分)
阅读下面的短文,然后按照要求写一篇150词左右的英语短文。
Many students fail to perform well in an exam not because they lack ability, but because of the unique pressure of the exam room—the tense atmosphere, the ticking clock on the wall, the teacher walking around, and the thought that their future will be decided by the exam.
It’s not just students who will face pressure. Human beings are competitive animals and we decide to evaluate each other, whether in exams, in job interviews or even on romantic dates, so all of us occasionally get nervous. Removing pressure from life is an impossible dream.
However, there are some ways which can help reduce our pressure. It turns out that we are far more likely to overcome the pressure when we are as familiar as possible with the situation we are about to face. Of course, even when we are well-prepared, we may still feel nervous, but at least we will be more equipped to deal with our nervousness than if we have failed to prepare. Furthermore, we may also benefit from reminding ourselves that the big moment is not that big after all from a different perspective. Even a huge exam is not as important as a loving family, or good health.
【写作内容】
1. 以约30个词概括这段短文的内容;
2. 然后以约120个词谈谈你对“压力”的看法, 内容包括:

2、作文中不能出现真实姓名和学校名称。

概括准确,语言规范,内容合适,篇章连贯。

第二节 读写任务(共1小题,满分25分)
The writer mainly tells us not only students but also other people would feel stressed on different occasions. Also, he gives some suggestions on how to reduce pressure.
As far as I ‘m concerned, pressure is part of life. It’s quite natural for us to feel stressed occasionally, at an exam, or when speaking to a stranger. So it’s of great importance to have a right attitude towards pressure. What we need to do is to relax ourselves and face the challenge positively and initiatively.
As Senior 3 students, we have to deal with some grown-up problems and make decisions by ourselves. Family can be one of the biggest causes of stress, such as problems with arguing with parents or brothers or sisters. We also have lots of stress from school, either from our classmates or teachers. However, the greatest pressure comes from study, which worries most of us as the National Matriculation Test is approaching. We also feel stressed about choosing our education after high school or not affording to go to university.
In order to reduce pressure, first, a balanced diet and enough sleep are necessary; secondly,   I would schedule my study properly so that I can have time to do sports or listen to music; also, friendship, support from my parents and encouragement from my teachers can help me a lot. I would try every means to relax myself and work with high efficiency to achieve my goal.
